Born in the 5th century AD was an Italian man of particular renown. Saint Benedict of Nursia was the son of a Roman noble and brother to a twin sister, Saint Scholastica.
Benedict was the founder of many monasteries and his main achievement was the work known as the Rule of Saint Benedict. He viewed prayer and work as partners and believed in combining contemplation with action.
This divinely inspired individual contributed more than anyone else to the rise of monasticism in the West. His influence spread across the European continent establishing a new cultural unity based on Christian faith. The early Middle Ages have even been called the Benedictine centuries.
Defiant in the face of evil and proactive in laborious efforts, the glorious Saint Benedict is honored and beseeched as Patronus Europae, the Patron Saint of Europe!
