During his life in the 6th and 7th centuries, Saint Arnulf of Metz was a renowned military commander, bishop and monk of royal Frankish blood. Married to a noblewoman, his descendants would go on to include some impactful heroes of the West. He was the great-grandfather of Charles "The Hammer" Martel and 3rd great-grandfather of Charlemagne.

Due to miracles attributed to him after his death, he became the Patron Saint of brewers.

Aqua Vitae is Latin for "water of life", a term used widely in the Middle Ages referring to liquors and has come to refer more broadly to alcoholic beverages in general. Draped across is the Bavarian flag.
